Asthma Educator-Pediatrics BHCD

Position SummaryThis position is responsible for respiratory assessments, as well as assessing asthma self-care plans and asthma educational needs within the primary care practices of the MaineHealth system.
This person plans, implements and evaluates asthma education for patients with asthma and their family members in both individual and group settings both within the physician practices and in other community settings.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Education:
Bachelor's degree in nursing or a health related field preferred.
Licensure/Certifications:
Licensure in the State of Maine as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, a Registered Nurse, or licensed health care professional with AE-C credentialing Currently certified or in process of achieving certification as an asthma educator (AE-C).
This certification must be achieved within 6 months of hire.
Current BLS certification May require valid State of Maine drivers license, to be able to travel between sites of care and to provide home visits as required, based on facility's needs.
Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years experience in a clinical setting, with experience in behavior change service, counseling, health education or related.
Knowledge and ability to perform office spirometry per ATS guidelines.
Knowledge of asthma pathophysiology, lifestyle recommendations, pharmaceutical therapies and self management practices and provides information and education in accordance with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute/Global Initiative for Asthma.
Knowledge of patient education and community health theories and practices related to disease prevention, behavioral change and methods of instruction.
Knowledge of objective and subjective evaluations used to diagnose asthma and assess its control.
Analytical abilities necessary to evaluate and revise educational programs based upon experience and patient performance.
Displays cooperative behavior and interpersonal skills.
Interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment.
Demonstrated high level communication and active listening skills:
ability to effectively problem solve and work with a wide variety of people.
Participant/Customer focus:
Excellent customer service and telephone skills.
Proficient computer skills:
basic MS office skills, work processing, database management, comfortable navigating database screens, etc.
Self direction and initiative to achieve team and individual goals; skilled as an individual contributor and team member, desire to contribute to the overall success of the team and the clients served.
Demonstrated ability to attend to detail and follow through on tasks.
Demonstrated dependability, flexibility and professional demeanor.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
